Halloween is nigh upon us, with the Halloween season in mind, I recommend the following short story.
“The Haunted and the Haunters” or, The House and the Brain by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Such a classic. Fear without blood, a classic haunted house story, winds up the suspense in your mind, rather than hackneyed images, rehashes of Freddie or Jason and variants.
Manybooks web site offers Public Domain Books to Download, and has an online Reader. If you visit here, and read the online copies, there is a Menu, use that to Select “Exit Reader” when you’re done reading if your browser controls don’t seem to be working properly. It works well, and the Browser would close OK, but I couldn’t get it to go Back with the Browser Controls until I Exited the Reader.
Gutenberg has it too:
THE HAUNTED AND THE HAUNTERS; OR, THE HOUSE AND THE BRAIN.
Google, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart actually sell this “Public Domain” story, but again, read it here for free, and when you’re done, search for other Public Domain stories on this site.
The story “The Haunted and the Haunters” is written in a style once popular probably in the 1800s. Rather than worry about pronouncing last names, or remembering them, only the first letter of the last name is used. Mr. C, Mrs R., etc.
The following online version was at Adelaide, a University in Australia that hosted many books, stopped hosting them but maintained the Database, and have since closed operations on the Project Completely. The Way Back Machine had many Archived copies, one is linked to below, I think this is the easiest format to read:
“The Haunted and the Haunters” or, The House and the Brain by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Here’s a reading of the actual story:
The haunted and the haunters or the house and the brain
The video consists of a single relevant image, with good quality narration.
Alternately, here’s a radio version. The video consists of a single relevant image, with good quality narration and sound effects. Although altered from the story as written, this version contains the extended ending that I’ve also read.

I like ghost stories where the fear is subtle but pervasive. This story fits the bill.

Yes indeed! A wonderful cinema street from star to finish that fits this bill is
‘Carnival of Souls’…shot in 1962 in Lawrence, Kansas and Saltair, Utah….the wonderful director
Herk Harvey (unintentionally) created a whole world from frame to frame in a vacuum tube…
And on a small budget…..
